MEPs vote for recognition of Palestine

Press Release

Wednesday 17 Dec 2014

Following the large vote of the European Parliament in favour of the resolution for the recognition of the Palestinian state, the Socialists and Democrats Group stressed the importance of this outcome for the peace process.  Nessa Childers said the outcome comes as a result of the S&D Group’s determination in pursuing this resolution, with the conviction that this will reinforce the tide of recognition among member states.

Childers, who is a member of the S&D group said:  “This is an historic moment for Palestine, Israel and the European Union. This decision was agreed today by a large majority in the Parliament thanks to the tireless commitment of my fellow socialist MEPs. It will reinforce the tide of support already seen across Europe.

“This resolution stressed the overwhelming conviction in Europe that time has come to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict through the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, with Jerusalem as the capital of both states living side-by-side in peace and security.

Europe, through the EU’s high representative for foreign affairs, Federica Mogherini, must now play a decisive role in the peace process, contributing to stopping the endless spiral of violence.”
