Childers welcomes new rules for palm oil labelling

News item

Monday 15 Dec 2014

‘Very pleased to report that palm oil labelling came into law in each EU country on Saturday 13th December.  I introduced this major piece of new legislation in 2010, the labelling allows NGOs to raise awareness among European consumers of the negative environmental and social effects of the deforestation and massive palm tree plantations in Asia’.

Background

The palm oil rule is included in the Sommer Report on Food Labelling – This report covered many aspects of food labelling.  It also includes an example of a major piece of new legislation, which ensures that palm oil, which is present in 40% of our food products, must now be labelled.

The initiative was backed by the majority in the parliament and is now European law. This labelling allows NGOs to raise awareness among European consumers of the negative environmental and social effects of deforestation and massive palm tree plantations in Asia.
