With five weeks to go until voters head to the polls, Nessa Childers – the only elected MEP running in the three-seat Dublin constituency – has revealed for the first time her influential substitute list: Dr Tom Clonan and Glenna Lynch, both of whom joined her for photographs at a sunny Merrion Square this morning.
‘With no by-elections for MEPs, substitute lists are always hotly contested,’ Ms Childers said. ‘But I am extremely fortunate to have two exceptional individuals supporting me in my campaign.
‘While I fully expect to see out my five year term if re-elected in a little over a month’s time, I feel that my substitute list really speaks for itself. Certainly, to have not one but two, well-known faces of such merit on board with me is a huge bolster to my campaign.’
Dr Clonan is a high-profile journalist, lecturer and writer, while Ms Lynch is a successful businesswoman who caught the public’s attention during the 2011 presidential election campaign when she appeared in RTE’s Frontline audience.
‘Tom and Glenna both represent the principles and goals that I strive for as a politician. They both champion transparency and honesty. They have shown throughout their respective careers that they are not afraid to stand up and to speak out.
‘It is an honour to stand side-by-side with them today.’
